Major magnitude 6.3 earthquake strikes central Italy

According to the United States Geological Survey a major magnitude 6.3 earthquake has struck Central Italy at 03:32:42 AM local time. The epicenter was registered 95 kilometres northeast of Italy's capital of Rome at a depth of 10 kilometres.

North Korea launches rocket

Despite international appeals, North Korea has gone ahead with a long publicised rocket launch. Authorities from the United States, Japan, and South Korea confirm that the rocket lifted off at 11.32 local time (02.30 GMT) on Sunday April 5, 2009.

The European Space Agency reported on Friday that the Wilkins Shelf, an enormous Antarctic ice shelf half the size of Scotland, could break away from the continent very soon.

Major explosion at Mt. Redoubt volcano in Alaska

The Alaska Volcano Observatory is reporting a "significant explosive event" at Mount Redoubt in Alaska. Lightning has been observed within the ash cloud. As a result, the AVO has raised the alert level to 'warning' and level 'red' for aviation.
